Profile Finnish Linguistics
What is the field of study about?
In the profile module Finnish Linguistics, current research approaches in Finnish Linguistics are dealt with in semesterly changing thematic emphases. Language-contrastive and language-typological aspects, which are characteristic of Finnish as a non-Indo-European language, play an important role: morphological complexity, which is reflected in flexion and derivation, casealternation in the central syntactic functions, sentence structure and basic sentence types, etc. Even if these topics are considered from the perspective of Finnish as a foreign language, the focus is on the application of relevant theories and methods to Finnish in order to gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between grammatical forms and function on the one hand, and to examine the theories for their adequacy in description and explanation on the other.
What does the Cologne Department of Finnish Linguistics do?
Current research topics in Finnish Linguistics at the University of Cologne include the history of Finnish as a foreign language in German-speaking countries, language pair-specific problems in transferring metrically bound language from Finnish into German, and morphological zeros in Finnish.
What are the prerequisites?
In addition to the general linguistic basis, at least receptive Finnish language skills are required for the study of the profile module Finnish Linguistics. However, the linguistic analysis of Finnish language data usually requires knowledge of Finnish at the B1 level (GER), the examination of Finnish linguistic literature requires receptive knowledge of Finnish at least at the B2 level. - If you have any questions, please contact the lecturers. We will also be happy to advise you personally.
What is the field of study not about?
The profile module Finnish Linguistics does not serve to perfect the knowledge of Finnish, but the aim is the linguistic research of Finnish in the past and present. If, in the case of changing thematic emphases, translation-scientific topics are also occasionally offered, they do not primarily serve to develop translation competence, but linguistic analysis competence.
