CCLS/CRC1252 Junior researcher grants

Call for proposals (2019)

The Cologne Center of Language Sciences (CCLS) is a joint research center at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne, acting as a hub for all of the university’s institutes working in the field of linguistics and language-related studies, including the philologies.

Supported by the collaborative research center SFB 1252 Prominence in Language, the CCLS aims to promote young academics. To this end, it offers financial support for junior researcher projects within three funding lines:

  • Line A: Junior workshop funding (max. funding of EUR 500 per application)
This line mainly supports workshops in Cologne. The funds are supposed to be used in particular to cover the travel costs of invited guests. Please note that no catering costs can be covered. To a certain extent, funding can be awarded for the organization of a workshop at external locations, provided that junior scientists of the University of Cologne are significantly involved in the organization of these workshops.
  • Line B: Travel expenses (Junior travel fund) (max. funding of EUR 500 per application)
This line is intended to promote active participation in national and international conferences, symposia and summer schools as well as short field research stays, provided that other funding possibilities have already been exhausted.
  • Line C: Special Projects (Junior special fund) (max. funding of EUR 200 per application)
This line is intended to support various projects that are usually not covered by other funding initiatives. Such projects include, for instance, further education and training (e.g. participation in and/or organization of coaching seminars), proof-reading as well as partial funding of publication and printing costs.

We invite Cologne-based doctoral candidates and postdocs from all linguistic fields to submit their application. To a limited extent and provided funds are available, student initiatives can also be supported in exceptional cases. In the case of projects jointly organized by several young researchers, the maximum funding amount may be increased if necessary.

The given amounts of funding are reference points. However, the funding committee can agree on different amounts in individual cases.

As stated above, the funds are set to be spent on materials and travel allowances. However, they must not be used for food and accommodation. In the aftermath of the funded project, a where-used list explaining which funds were actually used for which cost elements, as well as certificates of participation must be submitted. Applications for funding can be submitted twice a year per person at most (regardless of the line).

Application

The application should contain information on the following points (approx. 2-3 pages in total), that is the corresponding documents should be attached:

  • Applicant’s academic background
  • Topic, objectives and added value of the planned project for the applicant's own research and the (Cologne-based) linguistic research institutes, respectively.
  • Cost estimate with intended purpose.
  • In the case of co-financing: information on the co-financing body and statement why its support is insufficient.
  • Authorization for an official journey (see allocation)

Allocation

Applications can be submitted throughout the year. Please note that the application documents for a travel grant must always be handed in prior to a journey. What is more, the authorization for an official journey is required, which must be signed in advance by the applicant’s superior. It must be submitted together with the application documents before the trip. You can find the relevant form on the University of Cologne's website. Students who are not employed should contact their respective advisor.

There are four deadlines for submitting application documents per year, that is one per quarter, after which the committee meets and decides on the funding of the applications received. Applicants can expect to be informed about the committee’s decision no later than four weeks after the deadlines listed below.

  • March 15, 2019
  • June 14, 2019
  • September 13, 2019
  • December 13, 2019

The grant will always be disbursed after the necessary documents have been submitted following the trip. Please note that the payment will be made via the University of Cologne’s travel expenses department, which usually needs about 3-4 months for the settlement of accounts. You can find out more about the department’s processing status here.

Please send your digital application documents to ccls-info(at)uni-koeln.de. Please do not hesitate to contact us (same email address) if you have any questions.
