FAQ Bachelor, Master & Complementary Modules
Can I also enroll in the MA Linguistics as a native speaker of German?
No, the MA Linguistics is made up of the English-language courses already contained in the MA Linguistik (German) and is therefore only for international students. For native speakers of German, we offer the MA Linguistik, which offers both English and German course content.
Can I have e.g. AM6a and AM6b credited as advanced modules in the MA?
No, only one of the variants of AM6 can be credited as an advanced module, as the degree program should not only consist of language courses.
Can I combine AM6 in the MA, e.g. a Spanish course and a Danish course?
No, recognition is only possible in a block (e.g. Danish A and B). Individual language courses can be recognized in EM1.
Are there any formalities for the Master's thesis from the Institute of Linguistics?
Do the bibliography and/or the appendix count towards the 60 pages/30,000 words for the Master's thesis?
Usually, neither the bibliography nor the appendix are counted towards the length of the Master's thesis. If in doubt, please clarify this with your supervisor.
When can I take the module exam?
Written or oral module examinations are taken after attending the required courses of the module (e.g. language courses such as in AM6). If the module examination consists of a term paper, this does not necessarily have to be written once you have attended all the seminars in a module. As each assignment is linked to a seminar, it is also possible, for example, to write the module examination after the first seminar for the module and then attend the other seminars.
Can I attend the CCLS Lecture more than once and receive CP for it more than once?
No. Of course you can attend the CCLS Lecture several times, but you can only receive CP once.
Seminar vs. project seminar - what's the difference?
Since we offer few ‘real’ project seminars, the General Linguistics seminars in KLIPS 2.0 are often also linked as project seminars.
How do I know that I have completed enough modules?
Our overview (only available in German) shows all possible module combinations for the Master's degree.
Can seminars be retroactively linked to other modules in KLIPS 2.0?
No. This is only possible in the current semester, provided that it makes sense.
Can I transfer a seminar if the term paper for it has already been credited to a module?
Seminars can be moved in KLIPS 2.0 (see instructions), but not as soon as a term paper has been credited in the respective seminar (without further ado).
Can I get credit for a Spanish course in the summer as a summer school?
No, because pure language courses are usually not linguistic enough.
Can I also attend Bachelor courses for the EM1 in the Master's program?
Yes, if there are no comparable courses in the MA.
Can I do non-linguistic internships for EM2?
Yes, internships that serve as career orientation (e.g. PR, broadcasting, publishing, Lufthansa, etc.) are recognized.
What types of conference contributions can be recognized in EM2 in the Master's program?
In general, the EM2 aims to give you a taste of the academic world and teach you how to present your own work. For example, the following contributions are recognized:
- Poster presentatio
- Presentation together with a supervisor
- Bachelor thesis presentation
- Presentation or workshop at StuTS, if it is not too basic
Can I get credit for internships/part-time jobs from 2 years ago?
No. Internships etc. must be clarified in advance with the specialist advisor.
Can I move courses from other modules into EM1?
Yes, if you have already attended seminars for a module but do not wish to complete the module, these seminars can also be recognized in EM1.
How many courses do I have to attend for the EM1 and which courses can be credited?
A total of 12 ECTS must be earned for EM1. Lectures earn 2 ECTS, seminars 3 ECTS. Seminars with 4 semester hours per week earn 6 ECTS (e.g. language courses that take place twice a week). The courses can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered by the university, which can be found via Klips 2.0 > My studies > Extracurricular courses or via a keyword search. Courses from the linguistics department can also be credited in EM1. If you would like to have a course credited, this must always be clarified with your academic advisor.
When I want to register courses for my EM1, all I get in Klips is the message "No assignments in the curriculum. Registration not possible."?
As this module is very open and flexible, it cannot be easily edited in Klips. Therefore, the procedure
is as follows: Before registering for courses, please email your academic advisor (i.kapitonov[at]uni-koeln[dot]de)
indicating the courses you wish to take. After you have received approval, contact the respective teachers
of the courses and ask them whether you can take part in their course. You must add them in Klips via “Free
registration”.
In the last semester of your studies, the courses will be added to EM 1 by your academic advisor.
How many exams do I have to take this semester?
This depends entirely on you and your course of study, there is no set number. Within the standard period of study, it is recommended that you submit 2-3 assignments per semester.
I have registered for several courses, but all of them say “document request”
This is probably due to the time of registration: places are not allocated directly outside the enrollment phases or in the middle of them. Whether a place has been allocated is announced directly after the end of the respective enrollment phase (https://klips2-support.uni-koeln.de/en/klips-20-support/news-and-dates).
How do I get an internship?
Will there be a specialization in Computational Linguistics for the English MA Linguistics in the near future? If not, would I be able to choose the German concentration for my English Linguistics degree if I have a C1 level of German?
There are currently no plans to offer a specialization in Computational Linguistics for the English major. Due to university regulations, it is not possible to choose specializations from the German-language degree program unless you are enrolled in that program.
There is the option of simply choosing a different major and then taking the English-language computational linguistics courses that are offered (there are a few). These can also be credited for some other majors/modules, the only difference would be that “on paper” it would not say computational linguistics as a major.
